DNS Propagation Explained

DNS propagation is the period when some resolvers still have an older cached answer while others already return the new record.

Updated 2026-08-08

Why it happens

Resolvers cache DNS answers to reduce load and improve speed. The TTL suggests how long a resolver can reuse an answer before asking again.

A low TTL before a migration can reduce the inconsistency window, but resolver behavior and previous cache state still matter.

Example

If a record had a 3600-second TTL, a resolver that cached it just before your change may keep the old answer for close to an hour.

How to troubleshoot

Compare multiple resolvers, verify the authoritative record, and confirm you changed the correct name and record type.

Common questions

Quick answers

Does clearing my browser cache clear DNS everywhere?

No. Browser, operating system, router, ISP and public resolver caches can be separate.
